BRIAN
DONLEVY
"Behind
Prison Gates"
1939 - Columbia Pictures
An
undercover detective (Brian Donlevy) is put in prison to
pass himself off as Red, a gangster that robbed a bank, in hopes
of finding out who assisted Red and where the money has been hidden.
Everything is going just fine until
Red's sister comes to visit him. Since the real Red is actually
dead, the police have to involve the sister in the scheme to keep
the other inmates from getting wise to the real identity of the
detective.
A jail break with the inmate that
says he knows where the money has been stashed seems to be going
fine until it's discover that the "Red" they think is
a fellow crook is really an undercover agent.
This
small film is typical of the gangster-type movies of its day but
it has a good enough script to keep you interested.
Not available on video or DVD, keep
your eyes peeled for it playing on classic movie channels like
Turner Classic Movies or American Movie Classics ... and set your
VCR as it's a keeper for any Brian Donlevy fan or for those that
just love the old campy cop films.
